About us

Southside Penrhos Wesley (SSPW) is a community based A grade swimming club affiliated with the WA Swimming Association that welcomes all swimmers. Club members do not have to be a student at Wesley College or Penrhos College. The club focuses on development of junior and age-group swimmers.

The Club was established as Maida Vale Dolphins in 1978 and was originally based at the Maida Vale Pool near Kalamunda Road. In 1994 the club relocated to Wesley College in South Perth and changed its name to Southside Dolphins. The club later changed its name to Southside Wesley Swimming Club to both advertise our location and mark our close relationship with Wesley College. The most recent name change to Southside Penrhos Wesley (March 2007) was to emphasise the importance of our two major squad training pools and secure access to these incredibly valuable resources into the future.

All SSPW swimming members must train with the Watkins Southside Swimming. Watkins Southside Swimming is the “learn to swim” and “training” component of the program, but “racing” is associated with SSPW.

This is the opportunity for swimmers to put what they have learnt into practice!

Membership of the club is on an annual basis from 1 October to 30 September.

Our Goal

Our goal as a swimming club is to develop swimmers to be the best swimmers they can be. Generally swimmers will develop through club swimming to a level where they can compete at State Championships. From this point, swimmers will be encouraged to compete to the highest level of their ability, which could eventually include national and international competition. All swimmers, regardless of goals and level of ability will be appreciated, valued and supported by the club.

Our Pool Facilities

The Club has utilised the Wesley College swimming pool since 1994 (and more recently the Penrhos College pool) with  Nick Watkins as head of coaching. The Wesley Pool is a 50 m heated outdoor pool located on the Wesley College campus, on Angelo St in South Perth. The pool is maintained at an even 26 degrees Celcius throughout the year. Some squads also train (through Watkins Southside Swimming) at the 50 m Penrhos College pool  on Murray Street, Como during Term 4 and Term 1.
